Cruise Comparison
A window, or a door
that opens to the sea.
The most asked cabin question, answered.
Balcony and oceanview cabins share one big thing: a view of the sea. They differ in everything after that, most importantly the private outdoor space that turns a cabin into somewhere you want to linger. This guide compares them on the dimensions that decide your comfort and your budget.
The short version: a balcony is a genuine quality-of-life upgrade on scenic itineraries like Alaska and Norway, while an oceanview is the balanced middle that still keeps you connected to daylight and the water.
Side by side
Balcony vs. oceanview at a glance.
| What | Balcony | Oceanview |
|---|---|---|
| Price | More than an oceanview cabin on the same ship and sailing | A middle-ground price between interior and balcony |
| Natural light | Glass door and a private open balcony flood the room in daylight | A fixed window brings in light and a view, but the cabin is enclosed |
| Fresh air & privacy | Step outside for fresh air, coffee, and quiet of your own | No outdoor space; you use the shared decks for fresh air |
| Best suited to | Scenic itineraries such as Alaska and Norway where the view is the show | Travelers who want a real window and daylight without paying for a balcony |
Rules of thumb for choosing.
On a scenic Alaska, Norway, or Mediterranean itinerary, the balcony quickly pays for its upgrade because the view is the voyage. On a Caribbean week where most days are spent ashore, the extra cost is often better spent elsewhere.
If you plan to spend your daylight on decks or in ports anyway, an oceanview is a smart, balanced pick that still floods your cabin with light. If you love your morning coffee by the rail, your own patch of sea is worth it, and a Destination Engineer can price the difference for your exact sailing.
